Kitchen designed with Autism in mind

Earlier this year, Julie Ball of Julie Ball Designed Interiors approached us to install worktops in a kitchen she was designing for a family in Hedon, Hull. The worktops they chose were 30mm Fugen Stone Jasper with a leathered finish.

This was no ordinary family, though; they had a son with severe autism to the point where he had lost his confidence to leave the house, so they were resigned to staying home and not going on holiday…

Designing a kitchen/diner that worked for the whole family meant ensuring the right decisions were made at every stage of the job. Julie worked closely with the family to design rooms where the family could spend time together, and that provided a feeling of cosiness. They also had a strict budget for her to work with.

To manage their son’s autism, a continuous installation schedule needed to be decided on that would prevent any upset. Each evening, he would come down and approve & comment on what had been happening. Luckily, each improvement was a success, and he felt so much more comforted and supported, with an emphasis on being able to be together as a family. The texture of the surfaces, fabrics and wall coverings made him feel relaxed 😍

We were made fully aware of the son’s condition and what to expect, so we were able to work in a way that caused the minimum amount of stress and disruption to him throughout the process.

And the results speak for themselves, the family now have a kitchen/diner that works for them all, giving them the space they need.

As an added bonus, their son has since declared that, as he has handled the tradesmen for the past 5 weeks, he has now found the courage to take up a college course in Animal Management!!! Talk about life changing 🤩
