When you’re renovating your kitchen, the worktops take centre stage both visually and practically. When your home is busy, whether it’s with kids, cooking, or entertaining, you need a worktop that can keep up.
The most popular choices are granite and quartz, but which one is right for your lifestyle?
Let’s break it down.
Granite worktop pros and cons
Granite is a completely natural stone, cut directly from the earth and polished into slabs. Because of this, each piece is totally unique.
✅ Pros:
- Extremely hardwearing to stand up to heat, chopping, and knocks
- One-of-a-kind patterns that add real character and depth
- Can handle hot pans as it’s more heat resistant than most surfaces
- Natural appeal, perfect for rustic, traditional or luxury kitchens
⚠️ Things to Note:
- The colour and grain can vary from sample to slab, and while some people love this, it’s something to bear in mind.
- Needs sealing to resist stains (we do this as part of fitting), although the Sensa range does not need regular sealing.
- Slightly more porous than quartz

Quartz worktop pros and cons
Quartz is an engineered stone using natural quartz crystals mixed with resin to create an ultra-durable worktop with a consistent pattern.
✅ Pros:
- It is non-porous and resists stains and bacteria, with no sealing needed
- Low maintenance, just wipe clean with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water
- A large colour choice, so there’s something for every kitchen
- Because it is manmade, the finish is highly consistent with no variations
⚠️ Things to Note:
- It doesn’t offer the same organic texture as natural stone
- It’s not as heat-resistant as granite — always use a trivet
- It may be slightly prone to fading in direct sunlight over many years
